"Before you know it as the years go by, you're just like other people you have seen, with all those peculiar human ailments. Just another vehicle for temper and vanity and rashness and all the rest. Who wants it? Who needs it? These things occupy the place where a man's soul should be." -- Henderson the Rain King

My NetFlix rating: 1 star
Jamie says: Mind numbingly lame. The first half hour is like watching someone's crappy home videos which is not a good sign considering the movie's only an hour and a half long.
RIYL: Watching paint dry.

Knockemstiff

Book #18 was Knockemstiff the debut short story collection by Donald Ray Pollock.

This one blew me away. Easily the best piece of fiction I've read so far this year, and one of the best new books I've read in a long time. The stories reminded me of a sort of Harry Crews meets Raymond Carver, which is about as high a praise as I can give.

My NetFlix rating: 3 stars
Jamie says: Not the most watchable movie ever made, but I'm sure Dylan would approve of its opaqueness.
RIYL: Robert Zimmerman, the idea of David Cross as Allen Ginsburg, Cate Blanchett looking eerily like Blonde on Blonde.

Inventive Memento-esque sci-fi novel. Was expecting a lot from this one based on recommendations, but was somewhat underwhelmed.
