Sometimes a Great Notion

Book #55 of my 2005 reading list was Ken Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion.

This was a stunningly good novel and definitely earns a spot as one of the better books (perhaps the best?) I've read this year. Kesey masterfully tells his story of the Stampers, an Oregon based logging family, by weaving between the voices of each of his characters sometimes shifting perspective within a paragraph or even within a sentence. It's a style that could easily blow up in a lesser author's face, but Kesey manages to pull it off beautifully. Highly recommended.

I'm glad you liked this book. I don't think I've read a book by Kesey that I haven't liked. Read "Cuckoo's Nest" yet? I think it was better than "Sometimes".

I haven't read 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' yet, I've only seen the movie. I've got a copy though and will definitely be working it into my '06 list.

I think it's way better than the movie. If I remember correctly, it's actually about a time that Kesey spent in an insane asylum. He has a very interesting life.

Matt read it on the way down to Florida this year and gives it two thumbs up. I've been after him for years to read it and am glad he finally did. Now I need to work on getting him to read "Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" by Tom Wolfe. Great read.

I hope you enjoy reading "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". I look forward to reading your review in the future.

Electic Kool-Aid Acid Test is indeed excellent. One of my faves.

You can read more about Kesey's time working at a psychiatric unit here.
