Is IHS Bound For Glory?
Wow! My old high school has been selected as a semi-finalist for a new ESPN reality show called Bound For Glory. The show is looking for a rural school with an athletic program that has not had much success in recent years. Apparently Interlachen (population 1,500), its one stop light and its 2-58 record in football over the last 6 years meets the bill.
"Tiffany told me they were going to bring Dick Butkus on to help, I had to tell her that she needed to understand that Bobby Humphries is our coach, not Dick." -- IHS Athletic Director Doug Feltner
If everything works out this would definitely be more impressive than the previous biggest story to come out of our town, the infamous Dale Earnhardt Goat.

I knew IHS was bad but only winning 2 games out of 60 in the past 6 years? Sheesh. GO RAMS!!! :)

What about Montour High School?

I haven't seen anything more on this from the Palatka paper, so I'm not sure if Interlachen High is still in the running. Last I read, schools from Texas and Pennsylvania were also in the running. From the comment above I'm guessing that Montour High must be the possible Pennsylvania representative. Anyone else heard anything more about which schools are being consider and/or if a final decision has been made?

I heard that a school was chosen from Illinois. Has anyone else heard anything to verfiy which school was picked. Please post any further information that you have.....thanks!

no...just a small school in Illinois.

Go Vikings!

The finalist from PA is Deer Lakes. They have never qualified for the playoffs in almost 40 seasons of existence. Haven't heard anything on who was picked.

Is it true that Dick Butkus will be a coach? I heard the school in Illinois was near his alma mater, the U of I (Champaign, IL) Does anyone know if this is true??? What is the name of the school?

ESPN has posted this small blurb on their site:
"Bound for Glory
This series follows former Chicago Bears linebacker and NFL Hall of Famer Dick Butkus as he attempts to turn around a perennially losing high school football team. As coach, he will try to resurrect school spirit and winning ways with the help of a few well-known friends.
Along the way, the school's field, stands, locker room, exercise facilities, team uniforms and more will be made over.
8 one-hour episodes, Tuesdays at 7pm on ESPN Scheduled to premier September 20, 2005"
Still no word on which school was selected though...

First of all not a rural school and the team has won in the past. A lot of slimy politics involved in this decision, especially considering Montour is the suburbs of McKees Rocks.
Sometimes it really sucks when your the loser in a competition of losers!

What a bummer :-(
Totally agree that it sucks to be a loser in a game of losers. Guess that's how all of our schools got into the mix in the first place though.
I guess it makes sense for ESPN to pick a school that they think they can make competitive within a season. Should be an interesting show to watch.

If IHS Director Doug Feltner Is as one sided as his comment in the original post, maybe he is not the right person to be working with our kids. To make such a statement shows his total lack of intrest in benefiting the children & their athletic program. If Bobby Humphries is such a great coach, why does Interlachen have a 2-58 record. Maybe it's time for a change of Athletic Directors at IHS.
